Why Birth Photography?

Birth Photography is still a very new genre in Scotland, so I completely understand you might have some hesitations!
According to many, your wedding is the most beautiful day of your life. Your partner pops the question, and the wedding planning bells immediately start ringing. The thoughts of the dress, the venue, and the photographer might instantly come up. But what about the birth of your baby?

The journey to parenthood is a remarkable one. It is a journey of love, anticipation, and courage.

It is a journey marked by the strength and resilience of a parent, the support and tenderness of a partner, and the incredible beauty of new life entering the world. Birth photography celebrates this journey - it is a visual testament to the strength, love, and courage that define this extraordinary moment in a family's life.

From the first breath to the first cry, the joy in your eyes when you look down at your little one for the first time, every birth is a unique and beautiful story waiting to be told.

Birth photography allows us to capture these moments, to freeze them in time.

My passion for birth photography is rooted in my belief that these moments should be celebrated, cherished, and remembered. Every birth is a work of art, a masterpiece of love, and I am here to ensure that your story is told beautifully through the lens.

Embracing the Raw and Real

Birth photography is not about staged poses or manufactured moments. It's about capturing the raw, authentic, and unfiltered beauty of birth.

It's about preserving the emotions, the physicality, and the tenderness that defines this life-changing moment. The tears, the laughter, the pain, and the joy -

all these elements come together to create a visual narrative that speaks to the essence of life itself.

A Moment of Miracles

If you are ready to celebrate the miracle of life through the art of birth photography, I invite you to reach out and allow me the privilege of preserving your unique journey for eternity. Your story is worth telling, and I am here to capture every moment, every emotion, and every beautiful detail.

Why Birth Photography Matters

Your child, and their children, will be able to look back at these photographs and feel the love, strength, and excitement that marked their entry into the world. Birth photography ensures that these memories are not lost to time.

Sharing photographs of this magnitude, allows us to open the conversation again surrounding birth.

Frequent Asked Questions

  • I like to arrive when you are in active labour. However, if you have a preference for me to be there earlier on or if you have a planned caesarean birth, this can be discussed. I will photograph your labour, birth and stay around for the first two hours or so after the baby arrives to capture many of the first moments. This means that I will be there for as long as you want me to be there.

  • This is completely up to you! This is one of the many reasons why it is so important for us to meet before and talk through every detail of birth so that we can discuss which photographs you would like to have, and which ones you rather do not have documented.

  • Typically only one person is permitted into the operation theatre with the parent giving birth. If you are having a planned caesarean birth you will need to speak to your midwife, and anaesthetist and explain how important it is for you to have the caesarean birth of your baby photographed.

If your caesarean birth is not planned, I will try and speak to the medical staff but I cannot give any guarantees. But do not worry! I will be there waiting for you to document the first moments with baby in your arms when you leave the theatre and recovery room.

  • Light is needed for clear and sharp photos. The darker it is: the more difficult it will become to have clear and sharp photos. I use professional camera equipement with lenses that can deal with low light situations without having to use a flash. But image quality does suffer when it is too dark. Your photographs will be shot with a very high ISO, which means that your images might have more grain in them.

However, some soft lighting can already help a lot with this! Think of decorating the room with fairy lights and/or electronic candles.

  • Yes! I like to call these session the Fresh 48. This session will take place in the hospital or at home (if you have a homebirth) within 48 hours of your baby being born. I will try and be there at the first reasonable hour of the day to document these precious first moments.
